The aim of this programme was to inspire emerging directors to create original theatre for young people and impress upon the industry in general that such work is an exciting arena for artistic innovation and experiment.
The programme, led by John Retallack, Company of Angels and Annie Tyson, Drama Centre London, involved 4 young directors, 4 Central Saint Martins' design students and 20 Drama Centre acting students. Each director selected for the programme had a company of 4 to 7 actors, a designer, rehearsal space, a tiny budget, and two weeks time to create a 20-30min piece of work aimed at a young audience.
The work was presented at Drama Centre London on May 26, 2006 to an audience of industry professionals and primary school children. Both groups gave very positive feedback and were especially amazed at the quality and range of work the directors had produced in the short time span they were allocated.
The Young Directors’ Programme was designed as a pilot for Company of Angels' future work with young theatre-makers, through the Young Angels schemes and Angels Studio.
