Young Angels Theatremakers 2009

The winners of this year's Young Angels Award are Rachel Briscoe and Dan Barnard from Fanshen Theatre.

The
winners receive £20,000 towards the production, rehearsal space at The Junction and the opportunity to be
featured as part of Company of Angels' Theatre Cafe Festival 2010, as
well as full production mentoring, some marketing support.
Now in its third year, this award offers one emergent theatremaker or creative team the opportunity to develop, direct and produce a new European play for young audiences.
Applicants were asked to select one of the following three award-winning plays, all previously presented as rehearsed staged readings during our Theatre Cafe seasons:
- Blowing (Holland) by Jeroen van den Berg, translated by Rina Vergano
- The Dreamed Life of Nora Schahrazade (Sweden) by Mia Törnqvist translated by May Brit Akerholt or
- Headcase (Holland) by Esther Gerritsen, translated by Rina Vergano
From a shortlist of interviewees, two applications were selected for a week-long R&D session at the Junction in November. Teunkie van der Sluijs worked on Headcase while Dan Barnard and Rachel Briscoe (Fanshen Theatre Company) explored Blowing.
Background:
Now in its third year, the Young Angels Theatremakers Award is a collaboration between Company of Angels and The Junction supported by Arts Council England.
In 2007, two teams of theatremakers received a £5,000 R&D Award and access to rehearsal space. Emma Bettridge and Abigail Graham developed Jack’s Quest, a new interactive play for children, while Oystein Brager and Philip Thorne, aka Imploding Fictions, staged a UK premiere of Swiss play Norway.Today by Igor Bauersima.
In 2008, Young Angels Theatremakers was run in collaboration with Soho Theatre and the Embassy of Sweden. A £20,000 award was offered for the production of Swedish play Invasion! at Soho Theatre (Spring 2009).
