Company History

Company of Angels was set up in 2001 by John Retallack to foster and produce new and experimental theatre for young audiences.
The company’s mission is to broaden the definition of theatre for young people through experimental projects and new productions of a high artistic standard.

Forthcoming productions and projects include: Apples by Richard Milward, an outstanding first book (‘Catcher in the Rye meets the Arctic Monkeys’ The Times) adapted by John Retallack, a co-production with Northern Stage touring nationally throughout summer 2010; Theatre Café Festival 2010, our biannual new European writing festival in association with Unicorn Theatre and Southwark Playhouse; Blowing, by Jeroen van den Berg directed by this year’s Young Angels Award winners, Fanshen; the new Choreography for Children Award, developed in partnership with Sadler’s Wells and The Place: London Contemporary Dance School to encompass new choreographic work for young audiences; and Truant, an R&D collaboration with National Theatre of Scotland which will lead to a new play written by John Retallack.

Recent projects include: Colörs by Peca Stefan (Romania) and Tattoo by Dea Loher (Germany) at Tristan Bates Theatre, London; Iphigenia by Pauline Mol (The Netherlands) and This Child by Joël Pommerat (France) produced in association with ALRA, London; Sense, award-winning author Anja Hilling (Germany), at Southwark Playhouse, London; Children in Wartime, 3 contemporary plays including Myrad Boy from Bosnia by Ad de Bont (The Netherlands), produced in association with the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts (ALRA); and Theatre Café Festival 2008, our biannual new European writing festival in association with Unicorn Theatre and Southwark Playhouse.

The company not only produces shows but also initiates innovative projects and new models of work. Theatre Café Festival (2008), Theatre Café (2004), Theatre Café Europe (2007) and our Young Europe (2004) season have successfully brought new foreign plays to UK audiences; Asylum Seeker Narratives and its successor Project R are community schemes that directly involve young people; the GAP Theatre Project, a unique peer-mentoring initiative, having finished its third successful run in 2007, has been expanded to create the Gap Theatre Project Teacher Training. The next planned Gap Theatre Project will take place in summer 2011 in a north London primary school, working in partnership with Scarabeus Theatre and Islington Community Theatre.

Company of Angels also actively nurtures and supports emerging artists through the Young Angels programmes and the Angels Associates scheme.
