Company history

Company of Angels was set up in 2001 by John Retallack to foster and produce new and experimental theatre for young audiences. The company’s mission is to broaden the definition of theatre for young people through experimental projects and new productions of a high artistic standard.

Projects currently underway include: Theatre Café Festival (November 2008), a new festival merging the company’s work with emerging artists and our practice of both promoting and producing new international plays in the UK; the British premiere of Invasion! by award-winning Swedish writer Jonas Hassen Khemiri in co-production with The Junction, Cambridge and Soho Theatre (early 2009); and the Gap Theatre Project Kennet and Gap Teacher Training (summer and autumn 2008).

Following the success of Hannah & Hanna, Club Asylum and Crime and Punishment in Dalston, Company of Angels’ latest productions have firmly established the company’s reputation for challenging, high-quality work: Virgins, (in co-production with The Junction, Cambridge, Einburgh Festival 2006 and national tour), RISK, (Spring 2007 in collaboration with macrobert arts centre, Stirling, Y Dance and The Tron Theatre, Glasgow) and Truckstop, (co-produced with Eastern Angles, Stage Award Edinburgh Festival 2007, national and Eastern region tour) were all very well received by critics and audiences alike.

The company not only produces shows but also initiates innovative projects and new models of work.

Theatre Café, Theatre Cafe Europe and our Young Europe season have successfully brought new foreign plays to UK audiences; Asylum Seeker Narratives and its successor Project R are community schemes that directly involve young people; and the GAP Theatre Project, a unique peer-mentoring initiative, is currently being expanded having finished its third successful run in 2007.

Company of Angels also actively nurtures and supports emerging artists through the Young Angels programmes and the Angels Associates scheme.

Company of Angels has been a Regularly Funded Organisation of Arts Council England since April 2004.
